Founded in 1783 as a naval fortification the city of Sevastopol exceeded these limits and became the large seaport, the cultural, historical and recreative center for tourists.

The industry of the city is represented, in particular, by quite number of the large industrial enterprises of the fishing and fish-processing industry. The most powerful marine floating cranes of the former Soviet Union with hoisting capacity of 100-1600 t have been built at Sevastopol Marine Plant named after S.Ordzhonikidze. These floating cranes are multipurpose in their functions, they are used in the ports and at the shipbuilding yards as well as in the open sea. They are capable to complete all kinds of load-lifting, construction and erection works as well as any damage and rescue works in the sea.
The particular importance in an industrial potential of the city belongs to the radioelectronic and instrument-making plants of the military-industrial complex of the ex-USSR.
The remarkable role in the economics of the region belongs to Balaclava ore works where they output the flux lime-stones for the needs of the metal industry. Some raw material that does not meet the requirements of the metallurgy is used for the production of the building materials such as a road metal of various fractions, crumb of marble, quarry-stone and the others.
The construction enterprises of Sevastopol mine the Inkerman stone - a white building lime-stone to be exported to many countries of the world.
The light industry of the region is presented by the clothes and knitted-goods factories. The most known of them is the clothes factory named after Nina Onilova that is specialized in the production of dresses and suits. The goods produced at this factory are well-known not only in Ukraine but outside the country.
The agriculture of our region is specialized in grape-growing, gardening and vegetable-growing. Sevastopol is one of the most important grape-growing and wine-making regions of Ukraine. The total area of the vineyards is about 8 thousand hectares. Sevastopol grapes are distinguished with their high quality, a variety of their kinds, elite grape kinds are cultivated there, they are the technical grapes and excellent table kinds.
The advanced technological and production base in wine-making and the proved experience make the town a supplier of the best wines and champagne in Ukraine. The leading producers in national wine-making are Inkerman vintage wines winery, agrofirm "Zolotaya Balka" and Sevastopol winery.
